Myra Moore, director of technology at South Adams Schools, updated the board on the 1:1 laptop computer program during Tuesday evening’s school board meeting. She started by recognizing the teachers and support staff that served on the district technology council this past year.
“They were committed to our goals and played a huge role in our accomplishments,” said Moore.
The committee developed a 1:1 laptop proposal for the high school students and is ready to present it to the school board for review. Moore suggested setting up a school board work session to discuss the proposal in detail.
Other topics they discussed were how to inform the teachers about tools and resources available to them. One way they came up with was an after school tech fair for teachers and staff. It is scheduled to take place from 3:15 to 5:15 p.m. on March 1.
The committee also looked at the amount of printing done by staff. While they acknowledged that there would always be a need to print some worksheets and student work, they identified areas in each grade where wasteful printing can be cut down.
“This is a topic we’re going to continue to pursue and promote ideas on saving our environment and cutting printing costs,” stated Moore.
The board approved several new and revised policies on Tuesday evening. These policies include student supervision and welfare, educational options, transportation, school visitors, and public attendance at school events. They were unanimously approved on the second and final reading.
Several students were recognized at the board meeting. The Examples of Excellence for the month of February were the academic all-state athletes. Eleven students were nominated by their coaches for their achievements during the fall semester. They included Kristal All, golf; Kristen Lehman, golf; Ian Frank, tennis; Scott Hoeppner, tennis; Jonathan Steffen, tennis; Kristen Muselman, cross country; Tim Lehman, cross country; Evan Liechty, cross country; Cody Sprunger, cross country; Evan Johnston, football; and Dustin Wanner, football.
Other students recognized were Katelin Augsburger for becoming the county spelling bee champ; Cady Farlow for making it to state in swimming; and Todd Batt, Sawyer Miller, and LJ Moser for placing at semi-state and going on to wrestle at the state level on Friday evening.
Finally, superintendent Scott Litwiller updated the board on the sale of the Berne property. Bidding has officially opened and will close on March 30. At this time, no bids have been submitted.
