Fredrick H. "Fritz" Liechty, 84, of Goshen, former Berne native and businessman, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at Greencroft Gables in Goshen. He was born on January 8, 1928 in Berne to Hiram and Fanny (Beitler) Liechty. He was married on August 26, 1950 to Magdalene "Maggie" Lehman.
A loving devoted husband, father and grandfather, he placed great importance on his family. A 1950 graduate of Bluffton College, he was an outstanding athlete in basketball, baseball, and football and was inducted into Bluffton's Athletic Hall of Fame. As a dedicated jogger, he ran more than 85,000 miles.
He retired in 1993 as president of the First Bank of Berne, where he had worked since 1950. He was a longtime member of the First Mennonite Church in Berne, where he was active in Stephens Ministry and taught Sunday school for many years. He and his wife were very active in refugee resettlement. He was a former board member of Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary and Mennonite Board of Education. A Goshen resident since July 2007, he was a member of 8th Street Mennonite Church.
He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Nancy (Jake) Loewen; and Mary (Doug) Caskey, both of Goshen; and four grandchildren, Emma (Alex) Dugger; Nick Loewen; Jesse Loewen; and Alex Caskey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Laura Fisher; and Jane Bentz
Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 26 at 8th Street Mennonite Church in Goshen followed by a 7:00 p.m. memorial service. Officiating will be Pastor Kevin Farmwald and Pastor Brenda Sawatzky-Paetkau. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, January 28 at the Swiss Village Chapel in Berne. Officiating will be Chaplain Anita Rediger. Times will be posted later.
